The islands were formed by volcanic eruptions, made of basalt, dolomite and tuff. The surface of the island consists of hills in the south-west of Mauritius Island (the highest point is 826 m), the middle part of the island is a plateau up to 600 m high, and a low coastal plain in the north and east.
